Modern Warfare 3 Spec Ops getting new Survival mode
We’ve been hearing more about Modern Warfare 3 content this week, including the expanded Special Ops. And how exactly is Special Ops being expanded? The new Survival mode is one way.
Survival mode is basically what it sounds like, riding the success of similar gameplay modes like Gears of War’s Horde and Halo’s Firefight. In this new Spec Ops mode, players will have a wide arsenal at their disposal and be tasked with holding off waves of progressively tougher enemies across multiplayer maps. Spec Ops in Modern Warfare 2 was restricted to single-player maps, if you’ll recall.
Oh, and if you hated the dogs in Call of Duty before, you’re going to love these guys. Among the wide range of enemies you’ll be facing are the attack dogs, now available in a fun suicide bomber variety. Smart players will figure out before long the importance of strategy and adapting to the changing enemy units.
On top of Survival, Spec Ops will also be getting its own progressive ranking system, plus online matchmaking and leaderboards. Why the special treatment this time around? Sledgehammer Games and Infinity Ward are treating Spec Ops as a proper alternative to the game’s multiplayer, which means taking some of those features Call of Duty fans love about online multiplayer and applying them to the Spec Ops.
“We have all been challenged. There’s such hardcore players out there in the online community and you hear all the stories about (youngsters) swearing and ruining the experience,” says Sledgehammer’s Michael Condrey.
“With Spec Ops, you can really get in there and hone your skills in a more confined environment. I think it’s a little more of an easy entry. I don’t have as much time as I did when I was 20 to be honing my twitch skills, but this certainly gives me a venue to experiment.”
Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin describes the new and improved Spec Ops as a “third game mode,” which they’ve “really stepped up this time. It is really a stronger leg of the tripod.”
