Samsung has outed a new range of Series 9 notebooks, with three new 13.3-inch models and two new 11.6-inch models, priced from $1,049. The new Series 9 machines keep the styling of the models that began shipping in May, but add in new Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 processors, up to 256GB SSDs and up to 6GB of DDR3 memory. The new 11.6-inchers are the NP900X1B-A02US, with a Core i3-2357M, 2GB of memory and a 64GB SSD, and the NP900X1B-A01US, with the same processor but twice the RAM and storage. They’ll go on sale in August, priced at $1,049 and $1,249 respectively. Samsung’s 13.3-inch versions, meanwhile, are all available from today. The NP900X3A-B01US has a COre i5-2467M processor, 4GB of memory and a 128GB SSD, and retails for $1,349, while the NP900X3A-B02US has the same CPU and RAM but doubles up the SSD for $1,649 in total. Finally, there’s the $2,049 NP900X3A-A05US with a Core i7-2617M processor, 6GB of DDR3 memory and a 256GB SSD. There’s still FastStart, which Samsung reckons will see the Series 9 boot in less than three seconds, along with a casing allegedly twice as strong as aluminum and USB 3.0 connectivity. The displays are also billed as twice as bright as rivals offer.

Anyone who’s ever attempted to use a laptop on a sunny summer day can surely tell you that direct sunlight is not your friend — that’s why we like to ride out the season in our dark basement apartments. If only there were a way to harness the sun’s rays for good, instead of evil — like powering your PC while you’re off doing whatever it is that normal people do when it’s sunny outside. First introduced for the African market, Samsung’s NC215S will be hitting Russia in early August for 13,999 rubles ($479). The netbook sports a lid almost entirely monopolized by a solar panel, which contributes to an overall estimated battery life of 14.5 hours. The NC215S packs a 1.6GHz N570 Intel Atom dual-core processor, 250GB of storage, and 1GB of RAM into a 2.9 pound frame. It’s almost enough to make us want to venture out into the sunlight. Almost.

Update: The folks at Liliputing have been told the NC215S is heading stateside on July 3rd, with a suggested retail price of $399, so it looks like you’ll need to stay planted in your patience for just a few days more.

SAMSUNG Introduces First Consumer 30nm‐class DDR3 DRAM Modules

Memory Upgrades for Desktop and Notebook PCs Offer Speed, and Energy Savings

Ridgefield Park, NJ (June 9, 2011) – Samsung Electronics America, Inc., a market leader
and award‐winning innovator in digital consumer electronics and information
technology, today announced the introduction of 30‐nanometer‐class1 DDR3
synchronous dynamic random‐access memory (DRAM) modules for PC upgrades. This
new generation of faster, more energy efficient DRAM modules will be available
through consumer retail channels this summer.

“Replacing your DRAM can be one of the easiest, most cost‐effective ways to upgrade
your PC’s performance, and these new products offer the most energy‐efficient option
currently available to consumers,” said Reid Sullivan, senior vice president of mobile
entertainment marketing, Samsung Electronics America. “Samsung is committed to
bringing performance‐enhanced computing to consumers, and our 30nm‐class process
technology offers an outstanding combination of advanced low‐power DDR3
technology, with blazing speed up to 1,600 megabits per second (Mbps).”

Samsung’s new DDR3 DRAM modules are available in 2 and 4 gigabyte capacities, in
very low profile (VLP) unbuffered dual in‐line memory module (UDIMM) configurations
for desktop PCs, and small outline DIMM (SODIMM) configurations for notebook PCs.
Backwards compatible with systems designed for previous DDR3 and DDR2 memory,2
the modules are available in single or dual‐pack quantities.

Thanks to its leading‐edge 30nm‐class manufacturing technology – which achieves
higher memory capacity while using less power – the latest generation of Samsung’s
DDR3 DRAM modules use up to two‐thirds less energy than those manufactured with
the industry‐standard 60nm‐class technology. This improvement in energy efficiency
does not come at the expense of performance. The new modules transfer data at up to
1,600 Mbps, 20 percent faster than Samsung’s current 40nm‐class generation of DDR3
DRAM.

Samsung has been leading the advancement of DRAM technology since it developed the
industry’s first DDR DRAM in 1997. In 2001, it introduced the first DDR2 DRAM. In 2005,
it announced the first DDR3 DRAM using 80nm‐class technology, and in January 2011, it
announced the development of the industry’s first DDR4 DRAM modules.

Availability
Samsung’s new 30nm‐class DDR3 DRAM modules will be available in the U.S. through
numerous online and retail suppliers, including Amazon, Fry’s, Micro Center, Newegg
and TigerDirect. Estimated street prices for single pack modules will range from less
than $30 to less than $55; dual pack modules will range from less than $55 to less than
$110.

About Samsung Electronics America, Inc. Samsung Electronics America, Inc. (SEA),

Samsung Electronics Unveils Terabyte Hard Drive for Notebooks :: SEOUL, Korea, June 9, 2011: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a world leader in digital consumer electronics and information technology, today announced its 500 gigabyte per platter, one terabyte internal hard disk drive, Spinpoint M8 for use in mobile computing applications such as notebooks.

Samsung’s Spinpoint M8, which consists of two 500 gigabyte platters, provides users with one terabyte storage space. The form factor support the 9.5mm height to comfortably fit in mobile computing applications.

The high density was achieved by utilizing advanced format technology (AFT), which raises the data storage density per unit area, enabling efficient and convenient data storage. A reduced number of components such as disks and heads also contribute to approximately seven percent increase in operation speeds and eight percent decline in power demand.

The dual-platter Spinpoint M8 operates on a high-performance 3 gigabits per second SATA interface, provides an eight megabyte buffer memory and incorporates EcoSeekâ„¢ and NoiseGuardâ„¢ features for minimal noise levels. A redesign of the overall structure ensures enhanced shock resistance to protect the disk from physical fracture and data loss.

Samsung’s C.H. Lee, vice president of storage strategic marketing said, “The new Spinpoint M8 line-up supports the ongoing growth curve for high density data storage densities, especially as it raises the bar to exceed terabyte density levels in the mobile computing space.”

Spinpoint M8 is currently in mass production and available worldwide with the 1TB drive at an MSRP of $129.00.
