The revamp will reserve resolutions in excess of 4K (topping out at a maximum of 4,096 x 4,096) -- a gigantic leap from the WQXGA (2,560 x 1,600) limitation of its Sandy Bridge's forebearer -- opening the door to all sorts of resolution independent goodness. Guess that means you won't need a discrete GPU in the future to power that bodacious (but pricey) pro-level display.

Rugged, Lightweight, Convertible Notebook Offers Enhanced Functionality and Outdoor Viewability

Secaucus, NJ, June 9, 2011 – Panasonic Solutions Company, provider of collaboration, information-sharing and decision-support solutions for government and commercial enterprises, today announced a series of upgrades to its Toughbook® 19 fully-rugged convertible tablet. The updated device features a standard voltage processor, increased RAM and hard drive capacity as well as speed, a brighter sunlight-viewable screen and more. With these enhancements, the reliable Toughbook 19 continues to be the ideal PANASONIC TOUGHBOOK 19 RECEIVES SYSTEM PERFORMANCE, DISPLAY AND STORAGE UPGRADES — device for utilities, first responders, maintenance and field service workers.

Powered by the second generation Intel® Coreâ„¢ i5-2520M (2.5GHz) standard voltage processor with Intel® HD 3000 graphics, the Toughbook 19′s start-up time is more than 20 percent faster and overall CPU and graphics performance have also been improved compared to the previous model. This is also the first time a standard voltage CPU and Intel HD 3000 graphics have been included in the Toughbook 19. The device still does not require a fan, ensuring reliability in a challenging environment remains a priority. The new device also comes standard with 4GB RAM, expandable to 8GB, and runs a 32 bit or 64 bit Windows 7 professional operating system. A 320GB 7200rpm hard drive is standard, with an optional 128 or 256GB solid state drive available.

“The rugged Toughbook 19 convertible tablet has been on the market for five years, providing reliable connectivity to users in some of the most demanding environments including emergency services and utilities,” said Kyp Walls, director of product management, Panasonic Solutions Company. “With the new Intel processor and enhanced functionality, our users will benefit from improved performance and outdoor screen visibility without sacrificing battery life.”

Improved Functionality

The 10.1-inch XGA touchscreen on the Toughbook 19 now features a TransflectivePlus display, which, in addition to an adjustable LED backlight, harnesses the rays of the sun by using an internal reflecting layer to illuminate the screen and can generate up to 6000 nit of transflective brightness equivalent under 200K lx environment. This exclusive technology comes standard with anti-reflective and anti-glare screen treatments plus a circular polarizing filter for an unparalleled outdoor viewing experience. The LED backlight can deliver as little as 1 nit, useful in dimly lit areas or for concealed nighttime use, which is critical to the safety of military and public sector users.

The Toughbook 19 also includes a new dashboard designed to conveniently customize each Toughbook to the user’s preferred settings, providing a user-friendly quick launch interface for common functionalities such as brightness, volume, and tablet button backlighting. The dashboard also allows easy management of the device using helpful tools, such as the popular Panasonic Power Plan extension utility and PC information viewer utility.

To ease customer usability in the field, the Toughbook 19′s display rotation mechanism has been redesigned so mobile workers can convert from traditional laptop to tablet mode with just one hand.

Embedded Wireless Connectivity

The Toughbook 19 offers a variety of embedded wireless technologies, including Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n, Bluetooth® 2.1, optional GPS receiver and optional Gobi2000™ 3G mobile broadband technology from Qualcomm. The device is certified on the AT&T, Sprint and Verizon Wireless 3G networks, allowing workers to stay connected virtually all of the time. With certifications coming later this year, the Toughbook 19 will also offer embedded support for 4G networks.

Platform Compatibility

The upgraded Toughbook 19 maintains the same platform footprint as previous generation devices. This ensures existing customers can continue to use peripheral equipment, including vehicle docking stations, which significantly lowers the total cost of ownership.

Judging by this sample, at least, 1600 x 900 resolution is standard, as is a backlit keyboard, 3G SIM card slot, fingerprint reader, 3D output, and an HD webcam with Sony’s Exmor imaging technology. Alas, the available specs suggest Thunderbolt’s a no-show, though rumor has it Sony’s implementation of Intel’s Light Peak technology will use USB connectors, of which this has three. Here’s to wishful thinking, right?

The peculiar thing is, you can’t actually buy it yet. F2F lists staggering prices ranging from €1,809 ($2,642) to €2,839 ($4,146), though it’s not, in fact, available. Meanwhile, search results turn up mentions on staticICE UK and Belgium’s Execute, but they’ve been scrubbed from the actual pages. So, it looks like it’s up to Sony to announce this already — and dish up some pictures while it’s at it.

Late last year, LucidLogix introduced us to Virtu, the GPU virtualization software that makes disparate GPUs play nice on Sandy Bridge PCs, and now its extending the love to AMD Bulldozer and Brazos machines. The latest version of the software, dubbed Virtu Universal, also extends GPU virtualization to all-in-ones and notebooks (on both AMD and Intel), enabling simple switching between discrete graphics and the integrated ilk. What’s more, the program ushers in the debut of Virtual Vsync, which claims to bring “maximum gaming frame rates and responsiveness, while eliminating distracting and image-distorting visual tearing.” Of course, we’ll believe it when we see it, which, if LucidLogix has its way, should be before the ball drops in Time Square. Full PR after the break.

LUCID TAKES VIRTU GRAPHICS VIRTUALIZATION TO MORE PLATFORMS, MORE SYSTEMS
New Virtu Universal Immediately Available for Notebooks, All-in-One and Desktop PCs based on Either AMD or Intel Integrated GPUs

KFAR NETTER, Israel and TAIPEI, Taiwan – COMPUTEX 2011 – June 1, 2011 – LucidLogix demonstrated today for the first time at Computex 2011 its Virtu™ Universal® GPU virtualization software, on notebooks, All-in-One (AiO) and desktop PCs based on both Intel® and AMD integrated graphics processing units (GPUs). Virtu Universal is a new product that builds on the capabilities of the popular LucidLogix Virtu™ GPU virtualization software for Intel Sandy Bridge H61, H67 and Z68-based motherboards.

Virtu Universal dynamically allocates graphics resources between integrated and discrete GPUs on Intel second-generation Core processors and AMD Brazos and Bulldozer platforms, allowing the systems to take full advantage of the processing power provided by both GPUs. Consumers will no longer have to choose between popular media processing features like Intel QuickSync video transcoding and DirectX 11 3D gaming performance. Virtu provides consistent, simultaneous performance with both.

“We’ve had an amazing adoption of Virtu on select Intel Sandy Bridge-based systems,” said Offir Remez, president and founder of Lucid. “It was a natural step for us to extend this capability to all Sandy Bridge platforms including notebooks and AiO PCs as well as sharing it with the AMD fanbase.”

Virtual Vsync Delivers No Compromise Game Performance and Quality

In addition to the recently introduced Lucid Virtu software benefits of complete media and 3D gaming performance, LucidLogix Virtu Universal also features Virtual Vsync benefiting all gamers from casual to hard-core who no longer have to compromise between visual quality and performance. Virtual Vsync delivers maximum gaming frame rates and responsiveness, while eliminating distracting and image-distorting visual tearing. Virtual Vsync breaks past the limits of standard Vsync (60 FPS) to deliver:

• Unlimited frame rates – some as much as 120 FPS and beyond with in-game Vsync on.
• User-defined frame rate and visual quality selection
• Flawless visual quality without tearing
• Maximum responsiveness to mouse and keyboard – some as much as 250 percent or more
• The infrastructure to support for next-generation platforms

“Once again, Lucid’s ongoing innovations in GPU virtualization keeps the end customer in mind and eliminates common performance and feature compromises on PCs,” added Remez. “We believe gamers will be amazed at the boost in visual quality and keyboard responsiveness provided in Virtu Universal enabled systems.”

Virtu Universal is available to system manufacturers using AMD Brazos and Bulldozer, Intel Sandy Bridge Z68/H67/H61, and other Intel integrated graphics, like the G41 platform. To date Virtu technology has been verified with hundreds of games and applications and is bundled with motherboards from many of the worlds’ leading brands. The flexible nature of Virtu Universal makes the technology highly likely to be found on a variety of upcoming mobile and desktop PCs this year.
